Reiki at University Hospitals Provides Relaxation, Pain Relief and Other Health Benefits
University Hospitals Connor Integrative Health Network is home to beneficial therapy provided by trained Reiki masters. This practice of gentle laying-of-hands, when used in conjunction with more traditional medical therapies, can greatly reduce stress and improve the mental and physical well-being of individuals suffering from a variety of conditions.
What is Reiki?
Reiki, the Japanese word for universal energy (“Rei” means universal, “Ki” means energy) is a natural technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing and restores balance.
Using a gentle laying-of-hands, a Reiki master or practitioner transmits universal energy to the receiver which ignites the body’s innate healing power and leads to well-being of body, mind and spirit. Those who receive Reiki treatments often report feelings of warmth, deep relaxation, comfort and serenity.
Reiki has helped with many illnesses and conditions including headaches, tension, chronic pain and anxiety, and always creates a beneficial effect.
Though not a replacement for traditional medical care, it works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques, and often helps relieve side effects and promote recovery. It can also boost energy and improve mental clarity.
While Reiki can be considered spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma and there is nothing one need believe in order to learn and use it. In fact, Reiki works whether one believes in it or not.
Learning to Use Reiki
Though an amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense. Rather it is transferred to the student through an “attunement” offered by a Reiki master during a Reiki class. The attunement allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of energy that they may draw upon at any time and transfer to a receiver.
What Happens During a Reiki Session?
During a Reiki treatment, the practitioner places his or her hands on or near the client’s body in a series of positions, which are held for two to five minutes per position. A typical full-body treatment can last from 60 to 90 minutes, but benefits can be experienced in just a few minutes by both giver and receiver.
